Anthropologists pledge not to get involved in counter-insurgency and other "War on Terror"-related military activities:Discuss this article in the forums. (1 posts) The pledge website is here. It strikes me (Anna Stav) that this might be a more organised version of some of the discontent that surround the ESRC's "New Security Challenges" and "Combating Terrorism by Countering Radicalism" funding schemes. 'This issue [of Critical Psychology: The International Journal of Critical Psychology] explores the ‘internal’ subjective dramas of professional academics who are struggling to live with the contradictions of working within the mainstream, while at the same time trying to promote social and political change. We look at the conflict this can bring, and on ways of reflecting on our own discomfiting experiences so that they can in themselves become part of the processes of change.'

Drew Westen 'The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation' |
Scholarship -
General
This is a fascinating and highly readable book with much food for thought for activist scholars: 'The Political Brain is a groundbreaking investigation into the role of emotion in determining the political life of the nation. For two decades Drew Westen, professor of psychology and psychiatry at Emory University, has explored a theory of the mind that differs substantially from the more "dispassionate" notions held by most cognitive psychologists, political scientists, and economists—and Democratic campaign strategists. The idea of the mind as a cool calculator that makes decisions by weighing the evidence bears no relation to how the brain actually works. When political candidates assume voters dispassionately make decisions based on "the issues," they lose. That's why only one Democrat has been re-elected to the presidency since Franklin Roosevelt—and only one Republican has failed in that quest.'

Sailing to the Chagos Islands campaign |
Activism -
General

In the 1960s, the British Government forced out the people of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean to make way for a US military base on the Chagossian island of Diego Garcia. Despite losing repeatedly in the British courts, the British government continues to resist their return home. Hence this campaign:
'Pete Bouquet, Jon Castle and Tom Keunen will be sailing to the Chagos Islands from Malaysia in Feb. 2008. We will be sailing on board a 40' cutter "Musichana" donated for the project, and will visit Peros Banhos and Salomon only. (About 120' from Diego Garcia). After the visit we will continue on to La Reunion and Mauritius. The purpose of the trip is bear witness to the crimes of the British and American Governments and to raise awareness of the issue of the Chagos Islands. In particular we want to highlight the injustice and mistreatment visited by the British Government on to the Chagossian people, and to assist them in their struggle to return home.'

Oxford Research Group Sustainable Security project |
Political analysis -

Chris Abbott, Paul Rogers (Naspir member) and John Sloboda (Naspir member) co-authored this important book - Beyond Terror: The Truth About the Real Threats to Our World - under the auspices of the Oxford Research Group as part of an ongoing project on sustainable security. An earlier, shorter version is available free online. Here is what they say about their work:
'Since the horrific events of 9/11, Western leaders have held up international terrorism as the greatest threat to world security. However, it is not enough to simply insist that terrorism is the greatest threat to the world, when the evidence does not support this claim. In fact, our research paints a very different picture of the fundamental threats that we all face, with these threats coming from four interconnected trends: climate change, competition over resources, marginalisation of the majority world and global militarisation.' They advocate replacing the control paradigm with the sustainable security paradigm in responding to these threats. Discuss this article in the forums. (0 posts) |

John Pilger, probably the world's leading documentary maker, has released two box sets of his documentaries (still only a selection of his huge output). A great resource for teaching, especially as libraries are generally happy to lend DVDs.
The sets do not include his latest 'The War on Democracy' which is available from his website. This film was broadcast on 20 August in the UK on ITV: Naspir member Ruth Blakeley (University of Kent) was principal academic consultant for the film. Discuss this article in the forums. (0 posts) |
